¹² The sons of ^(A)Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but ^(B)Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan); and the sons of ^(C)Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ^13 (D)The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puvah, Yob, and Shimron. ¹⁴ The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. ¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah, ^(E)whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, together with his daughter Dinah; altogether his sons and his daughters numbered thirty-three.

And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel. ^18 (G)These are the sons of Zilpah, ^(H)whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob—sixteen persons.

¹⁹ The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ And ^(I)to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera the priest of ^(J)On, bore to him. ²¹ And ^(K)the sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all.

²³ The son^[a] of Dan: Hushim. ^24 (L)The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. ^25 (M)These are the sons of Bilhah, ^(N)whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob—seven persons in all.

²⁶ All the persons belonging to Jacob who came into Egypt, who were his own descendants, not including Jacob's sons' wives, were sixty-six persons in all. ²⁷ And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two. ^(O)All the persons of the house of Jacob who came into Egypt were seventy.

Saul's Rash Vow

²⁴ And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, ^(A)so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food. ²⁵ Now when all the people^[a] came to the forest, behold, there was honey on the ground. ²⁶ And when the people entered the forest, behold, the honey was dropping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. ²⁷ But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath, ^(B)so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright. ²⁸ Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food this day.’” And the people were ^(C)faint. ²⁹ Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See how my eyes have become bright because I tasted a little of this honey. ³⁰ How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies that they found. For now the defeat among the Philistines has not been great.”

³¹ They struck down the Philistines that day from ^(D)Michmash to ^(E)Aijalon. And the people were very ^(F)faint. ³² The people ^(G)pounced on the spoil and took sheep and oxen and calves and slaughtered them on the ground. And the people ate them ^(H)with the blood. ³³ Then they told Saul, “Behold, the people are sinning against the Lord by eating ^(I)with the blood.” And he said, “You have dealt treacherously; roll a great stone to me here.”^{[b] 34} And Saul said, “Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, ‘Let every man bring his ox or his sheep and slaughter them here and eat, and do not sin against the Lord by eating with the blood.’” So every one of the people brought his ox with him that night and they slaughtered them there. ³⁵ And Saul ^(J)built an altar to the Lord; it was the first altar that he built to the Lord.

Israel Forsakes the Lord

2 The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ² “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord,

⁴ Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the clans of the house of Israel. ⁵ Thus says the Lord:

³⁸ And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? ³⁹ And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ ⁴⁰ And ^(A)the King will answer them, ^(B)‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these ^(C)my brothers,^[a] you did it to me.’

⁴¹ “Then he will say to those on his left, ^(D)‘Depart from me, you ^(E)cursed, into ^(F)the eternal fire prepared for ^(G)the devil and his angels. ⁴² For ^(H)I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, ⁴³ I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ ⁴⁴ Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ ⁴⁵ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, ^(I)you did not do it to me.’ ⁴⁶ And these will go away ^(J)into eternal punishment, but the righteous ^(K)into ^(L)eternal life.”

Paul in Rome

¹⁷ After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, ^(A)though I had done nothing against our people or ^(B)the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. ¹⁸ When they had examined me, they ^(C)wished to set me at liberty, ^(D)because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case. ¹⁹ But because the Jews objected, I was compelled ^(E)to appeal to Caesar—though I had no charge to bring against ^(F)my nation. ²⁰ For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is ^(G)because of ^(H)the hope of Israel that I am wearing ^(I)this ^(J)chain.” ²¹ And they said to him, “We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of ^(K)the brothers coming here has reported or spoken any evil about you. ²² But we desire to hear from you what your views are, for with regard to this ^(L)sect we know that everywhere ^(M)it is spoken against.”

²³ When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening ^(N)he expounded to them, testifying to ^(O)the kingdom of God and ^(P)trying to convince them about Jesus ^(Q)both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. ²⁴ And ^(R)some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved. ²⁵ And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: ^(S)“The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:

²⁸ Therefore let it be known to you that ^(X)this ^(Y)salvation of God ^(Z)has been sent to the Gentiles; ^(AA)they will listen.”^[a]

³⁰ He lived there two whole years at his own expense,^[b] and ^(AB)welcomed all who came to him, ^31 (AC)proclaiming ^(AD)the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ ^(AE)with all boldness and ^(AF)without hindrance.
